This has been answered several times during the last few days and
weeks. Please read the archives. .gdbm is efficient even for 500 000 +
records product.asc files. When searching for single keywords as in a
text string like a title, use glimpse searches on the indexed products
files (see docs for a very nice description how to do it) and if you
have a large product.asc file use the split(1) UNIX/POSIX command
(also very nicely described in the docs) to make small index files.

If you can search for matching strings at the beginning of a field use
binary searches on a dictionary-ordered pre-built index. (Again also
this is described in the docs). If you have to use SQL please read the
archives about what you have to do considering indexing. It just has
been discussed in length.

As for category searches, Mike Heins has given very helpful hints in
his answer to Thomas Walker on Thursday.

It is really worth while to follow the list and to read and search the
docs and the archives these days.

Have fun. :-)
