I don't recall reading that anywhere.  It's not true, you can use
an existing database.  Maybe you mis-understood a statement that
MV *can* populate a DB for you.  It's a feature you don't need
to use.

You want to have a catalog accessing both a flat table database and
an SQL database?  Never tried that but it *should* work.  As long
as you don't name both products :)

Give it a shot and post specific questions if/when you run into a
problem.
