ASP support on UNIX is not as ubiquitous as you'd think. Apache support
for ASP is an add-on Perl module (ASP.pm) that works in conjunction with
another add-on Apache module called mod_perl. Neither of these modules is
part of the base Apache distribution. Besides, there are still plenty of
non-Apache UNIX web servers out there.
My impression is Apache::ASP exists mainly as an alternative to the
Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions for UNIX, which have slower
performance and still have enough security holes to make them scary to
webmasters and system adminstrators.
I know we're not in any position to critique Mike's use of his limited
development time :-). But I think there are a lot of indicators that XML
is becoming *the* technology of choice for data exchange (as a superset of
HTML, for EDI, for e-commerce, etc.), and as a "concerned party" it seems
to me like that is the direction MiniVend should go as well, time
permitting.
