Variable in mv.vfg or catalog.cfg?

Are there a differences between  the use of the Variable-Directive in
minivend.cfg or catalog.cfg?

I am asking because of the differences between

and 
http://www.minivend.com/minivend/docindex/23.26.Variable.html

I am wondering if I can set CURRENCY and LANG for MV only or even for every
catalog on its own.

My problem is that I have not figured out yet how to set the defaults for
mv_locale and mv_currency (and that makes problems with localization
here...)
