OK, I tried this and it worked:

[loop search="ra=yes
              tf=[scratch sortby]
              ml=[db-count]"
      with="-lines"]

The key is adding ml=[db-count] ([db-count] is a UserTag in minivend.cfg, circa MV3.14?). 

This still seems like a roundabout way of doing this though. Is there a more elegant way? Perhaps some config setting I'm missing?
