logging from perl

Is there any function to write to a logfile from in-page perl? 

I've tried embedding [tag log my_error_log.txt]$some_value[/tag] within the [prel] tags, but the log only reports "$some_value" 

I've tried logGlobal("$some_value"), but Safe does not like that one bit. 

Any ideas?
