Before and after I sent this, I went through the FAQ again...could you
point out the specific FAQ question that I appear to have overlooked? :(

Appears I read further into the docs then you?  From the INSTALL guide:

    # Become superuser if you are an ISP or other organization that
    # will be running multiple catalogs. If you don't have root access,
    # don't worry about it.
    #
