Help! Searching words beginning with "A" not working

Well i gave up on my original idea of trying to do this in a form.  for now
i am trying to get the following code to work (i got this from the mail list
archive and it is supposed to work!)

[page scan
  se=a.*
  sf=description
  bs=yes
  sp=bresults]A[/page]

it comes back with
"could not find any matches for a.*" (which is in my [no match] section of
my results page).

Am i missing something?  I'm running solaris 2.7 (SunOS 5.7), is it a
platform issue? My minivend version is 3.14-3 and i am running perl 5.005.
It's very frustrating when you know something is supposed to work but it
doesn't.

any advice would be appreciated!!
