What does the mysql log show?

Is the socket really /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock?  Is it really
a socket?  The "=" thing might be the way you have set your
terminal or 'ls' or it might be just wrong.  What are the
permissions on it.

Read the mysql manual; you can specify exactly where you want
it to be and conversely - find out exactly where your version
has placed it. Ours, for example, are /var/run/mysql/mysqld.sock.

You'll get better help ASAP if you give better and more complete
information and do some homework first.
