I run about 115 (perhaps a few more) different stores/catalogs off of one server
(some of them are rather high traffic, others not so much.) Our server (we use
the products.asc file system now, but are developing an SQL based server as I
speak) has 256Megs ram and is a single 350 w/ SCSI and a fast connection to our
provider.
Minivend handles all of our load VERY well (considering our traffic,) even
while having all these very different catalogs running around (most of the
catalogs have unique file trees / buttonbars, but share a common shipping
table.)
It's pretty easy to make a series of catalogs all work together very easily (so
I think at least.) For schools that want more than one catalog (or major store
sections, which I consider to be reason enough for more than one catalog) I use
symlinks to link many of the buttonbars / databases / pages / page directories
to the central bookstore. I don't know what this does to preformance, but
it makes maintaining the many catalog system much easier.
also our beta server, running 70 or so of our catalogs using SQL, preforms
wonderfully at 15 times our current load (simulated, so who knows what that
_really_ means ;) It's a dual P]|[ 500 w/ 512 ram / SCSI.
not too much useful information (I almost didn't post this,) but just a little
testimonial that a multi-catalog mall can work and preform very well because
Minivend *rox*.
