I could be mistaken, but my recent experience with altering leftside as well as many of the
other layout elements is that they are controlled by the catalogs configuration file and read in
at startup time.  I attempted to change LEFTSIDE on the fly without success so I took what is
perhaps a kloogy path and just created additional LEFTSIDE_XXX's in the catalog config file and
made the appropriate references in the actual page.  Worked fine, but if there is a mroe dynamic
method, I too would be interested.
