I can only talk from my own experience, but you may want to increase
your memory. I'm using a dual processor Pentium Pro/200 Linux box that
had 128M of RAM, but the load was climbing after a few days, then minivend
would dump core and the system would crash.

Turns out that the system was using up memory and swapping, which was
slowing down the system. As the system slowed down, it became bogged
down with other operations. More memory was used until minivend died,
started dumping core, and then the kernel wigged out within a few
seconds.

I added another 64M of RAM and the system has run smoothly with a low
load for the past week.

Obviously, your mileage will vary. The server is hit pretty heavily
and does lots of CGI-type stuff, so it's always busy. The load rarely
goes above .2, though.
