[mv] using [total-cost] in a [if condition]

Is it possible to use the [total-cost] tag in an [if] statement? I've tried
setting a scratch variable to hold the value of [total-cost] but I'm not sure
how to make the [if] tag refresh properly. It doesn't seem like the scratch
variable is being update everytime the page is refreshed (I'm using a
onClick="this.form.submit()" tog to refresh the page in question (the form is
set to refresh on submit.
Anyone have clues?
