[mv] displaying key value from arbitrary database

Can anyone explain how to display the key value from a record in an
arbitrary database? I have a page that returns the results of an [area
scan...] tag and lists some of the contents of a database using [item-data
filename fieldname] tags for each iteration of the search list. Everything
works fine, except that the contents of each record's key field don't
display using this method. Does anyone know why? Is there a special
syntax for displaying the key field of an arbitrary database. I have
scanned and searched the vast docs and list archive and have not come up
with anything definitive. My ISP is running a UNIX server with Perl 5.004
and Sun OS 5.7, I am running Minivend 3.12.
