A basic layout question though, is it a good idea to present merchandise
without initial
photo's?  Someone else asked me last week about that approach and my
first reaction was that it
may not catch the buyers interest fast enough.  Thoughts?

That is a question we went back and forth on.  After looking at some
very well done sites, we decided on this approach.  I think there are
enough sites out there doing this that people are used to the concept.
Time will tell.
