I have been down this road and it is full of potholes.  The following is in 
use on our site and it interpolates mv_searchspec or any other variable 
correctly:

[page href=scan arg="sp=browse1
                         df=yes
                         di=category
                         dl=[value mv_searchspec]
                         "]

This is assuming that there is a value in mv_searchspec.
