Re: [mv] Performance: [include] vs. [buttonbar] vs. __VARIABLE__
****** message to minivend-users from Ed LaFrance <edlafrance@printexusa.com> ******
Though I haven't noticed an appreciable difference, I would assume that the
__VARIABLE__ method loads fastest, because the content in question is read
into server memory just once when the catalog starts. Even then, the end
user experience may not be significantly affected, e.g.: if the file read
into the __VARIABLE__ contains many image tags that remain the same, they
would be cached on the end-users browser in any case, which would be the
largest contributing factor to any perceived speed gains.
From a maintenance standpoint, the variable method has a major
drawback: the server has to be restarted so that changes to the content of
the pages in question will be read into the __VARIABLE__. Restarting the
server once your site in online could negatively affect the user
experience! The [include file="pages/extrastuff.html"] method reads all
content from disk each time a page is served, so changes update on the site
"instantly".
