[mv] Lost in Perl

I'm not exactly a newbie when it comes to perl but using it with
minivend is confusing and frustrating me. 

Consider the below code
[item-list]
  [perl tables="products"]
     $price = $Values->{price};
     return "The price is $price<BR>";
  [/perl]
[/item-list]

It seems to me that this should return the prices of all of the items
currently in the cart. Unfortunately $price always ends up being null.
Am I missing something here?

Oh, and products is defined as a table in the catalog.cfg and another
[item-list] loop is returning the information so I know something is in
the cart.

Aside from that I just don't know what is going on.
