[mv] MiniMate Question

Hi all,
This a quick reality/sanity check question...
I've checked the Docs/FAQs & Mailing List, there seems to be some
amount of confusion and I am now, ummmm, confused too ;-)
I created a user <mvadmin> with a password for admin tasks, this
resides in <*/products/userdb.txt>:

mvadmin ***** current Super User ....
----
The minimate file <*/products/minimate.asc> contains:
----
mvadmin 1 products....
----
Now as far as I can tell, (maybe I'm wrong?) that is about all you
need to do to allow logins via */config/menu.html.... I haven't as
yet configured .access / .access_gate etc...
BUT, and here is the sticking point, whenever I input those values
MMate returns:
Failure: Password mismatch
Am I just being stupid or has something gone wrong? I've restarted
the server, and am now a little lost as to where to continue from
here.
This is using the latest mvend distribution "4.03".
Any comments welcome...
