Short rant:
Does anyone besides me ever make the FAQ the first stop instead of
the last?
I have personally used and integrated dozens or even hundreds of software
packages on all different levels -- user, integrator, and developer.
The *first thing* I do upon receipt of any problem is find the FAQ,
if it exists, and read it. Many times my problem is answered there.
And then I start investigating further, making full use of the grep
command and/or FIND in my web browser. I get all documentation. Then I
start cruising the directories looking at things. I don't always find
them, but I learn in the process.
Sometimes I read the FAQ before even downloading the package.
In 8 years of using freely-available software packages, day in, day out,
you can count the number of questions I have asked on the fingers of your
hands. And I have successfully used most any of them I put my mind to.
And why do I do this? *Because I don't have time to ask someone else*. It
is much, much, faster to find it myself. All it takes is the ability to
use "grep" or the find command in a web browser or editor.
Try it. You'll like it.
