I don't know if you can redefine LEFTSIDE by any method other than a 
reconfig...

What you could do is use the [include] tag:

         [include file="pages/leftside"]

will effectively replace

         __LEFTSIDE__

The [include] tag will accept other tags as its argument, so you could do 
something like:

         [page href="mypage" arg="leftside2"]Go to the next page[/page]

to make your link, and then

         [include file="[data session arg]"]

to use leftside2 on mypage.
