The subject tag seems to have been replaced by the [error] tag.

I just did the same thing yesterday.  Here is the code I added to my 
needfield.html file:


     [if errors]
     <FONT SIZE="+1" COLOR=RED>
         There were errors in your form submission.
     </FONT>
     <BLOCKQUOTE>
         [error all=1 show_var=1 show_error=1 joiner="<BR>"]
     </BLOCKQUOTE>
     [/if]
