[mv] MV 3.14-5 [data session failure] vs. [data session last_error]

I do not understand the difference here and I've poured through the
documentation and the mail list and still I'm coming up nill.

I'm recording these errors:
 /cgi-bin/disty/process Attempt to order missing product code:
in the catalog error.log (this isn't the same error log of earlier, that was a
4.04 catalog), and yet the
    [if session failure]
doesn't work but the
    [if session last_error]
does however the last_error doesn't clear so it continue appear on the page.

What am I doing wrong with the first [if] or how can I clear the last_error
value after viewing it so it doesn't reappear unless there is a real error?
