There is a way around this but only if you are using solaris. If you are
then you can use POSIX acls. I don't know much about them but I was told
they would allow you to get around this (and that they suck hard).

I'd think if you could do AFS style ACLs that would resolve this issue
as well. But you'd need to have the files on an AFS fileserver.

I was also just told that NFSv4 supports ACLs but it uses the NTFS model
for it. You mgith want to check that out if you have the time or
inclination.
