Re: [mv] HTML editors
****** message to minivend-users from Ramsey French <rammjet@mac.com> ******
Same here (Mac user), except I use Fetch instead of Anarchie. Wonder why we
don't like using the FTP client built into BBedit? Is it that we are
innately control freaks and we want some overt action to be taken to ensure
our work has been delivered?
In any case, I edit in BBedit, Command-S (left hand) to save it, drag-n-drop
(right hand) the file icon into the Fetch window and then click on my
browser. By then Fetch has chimed that the file transfer has completed and
I reload the URL in the browser to see what havoc I have wrought. Then
start over. Better first time writing means fewer "start-overs".
For basic design, I (locally) do manual html coding until I get it looking
right and then go and substitute MV variables and tags for colors, styles,
fonts, urls, searches, etc. And, while developing, I try to break
everything down into little modules that I "include". Make sure each module
functions on its own and at the end of development, merge the needed parts
together.
And Racke stated that we all tend to become Linux conversant as part of our
MV learning process. I don't necessarily agree. I have taken one course in
Unix as part of my day job and used that with trial and error to set up MV
on a server one time. After than, I have not needed to mess with Linux very
much (occasional telnet sessions). The process described above is not Linux
dependant (edit, FTP, run browser, repeat). And now, I have moved to a host
that manages MV for me (thanks Jason!), so I have next to no exposure to
Linux.
On the otherhand, when I have time, I like to learn new things. So, I'm
planning to set up an old Mac I have with LinuxPPC 2000 and see if I can get
MV installed and running on it. Just for grins. And since the next MacOS
will have a Unix variant at its core hidden beneath the Mac GUI, it is
probably a good thing to learn.
