[mv] [OT question] Accounting packages on Linux(again!<g>) (fwd)

****** message to minivend-users from Birgitt Funk <birgitt@minivend.com> ******

Hi list,

I found this question, which has come up a couple of times before
on lists relating to the use of Linux in developing countries.

Folsk are looking for an open source accounting package running on
Linux. As you can see from the thread folks im subsaharan African
countries, Malawi and Cameroon, need it right now.
(SDNP = Sustainable Development Networking Programme, a program
from UNDP http://www.sdnp.undp.org/home.html)

My question: Has someone experience with it ? Does it work with
MV together ?

I dunno, but I have the feeling I have seen that somewhere before
and that this was somehow related to MiniVend.

Can someone tell me, if my faint remembrance of having seen something
mentioned like it, is wrong ?

If someone can give some information about it to the lists
below To: ma-linux@tux.org
      To: wangenge@sdncmr.undp.org
      CC: linux-without-borders@tux.org, linux-afrique@francophonie.org

it might make some folks a little smarter and happier.

And it might Minivend/Akopia give a broad hint that its package
will be used by a lot by folks, the developer(s) and documenters
might not have given that much thought.

Thanks.

Hi, Gang! The Subject has come up on the linux-without-borders list,
and the following reply has been sent us by a member.

Has anyone had any experience with "freeside"(see below)? Ken?

Best wishes,

Alan

As far as I know there is no good double entry book keeping accounting
packages in GNU/Linux, none that give you freedom.

Malawi SDNP is badly in need of an accounting package that can assist us
to manage our growing user accounts and track our finances including
paying and non-paying users on our network.

However, you may be able to solve a part of your problem using
`freeside', which is an open-source, freely redistributable
billing and account administration package for Internet Service
Providers.

    http://www.sisd.com/freeside
Billing and Account Administration package for ISPs

The Web page says that freeside is:

Written in Perl and easily customizable.

Uses Perl's DBI allowing use of almost any database backend
to store data. We currently recommend PostgreSQL or MySQL.

Source code is available under the GNU GPL or Artistic
         license.

Web-based interface (including most of the configuration).

Track customers by reseller/agent. Limit the packages a
particular agent or class of agents may sell.

Tax rates customizable by state and locale.

Exports directly to UNIX passwd and shadow (or master.passwd)
files, ERPCD acp_passwd and acp_dialup files, and/or RADIUS
         users files.

Works with ICRADIUS or Radiator to authenticate directly from
         SQL databases.

Virtual domain support. Exports Sendmail virtusertable and
sendmail.cw files, and/or Qmail virtualdomains, rcpthosts and
         recipientmap files.

         Signup server with Windows/IE autoconfiguration

The freeside-bill script can be run daily to bill all
customers. Printing should be configured on your freeside
         machine to print invoices.

Real-time credit card processing with CyberCash CashRegister,
         Authorize.Net, or Signio.

I have never used it; from its description, it looks worth trying.

Congratulations Wawa! Are you planning to run a full ISP operation?

If yes then you need to put in place billing services first. Depending on
which
router or access server you have this could be via RADIUS or TACACS+.
These will tell you who is logging into the system and who to allow and/or
keep out.

The data that these give you then needs the finances/accounting software
that we were looking for.

No, we did not get the finances/accounting software we were looking for on
LINUX. We have done some very extensive searches but can say that there
is no suitable open source software that fits our needs.

We were delighted when Raul pointed us to accountixinc but their software
requires a foxpro binary and the Internet link where they point us to get
it does not work. A search for foxpro on LINUX has also been futile. So
for now are stuck and we may have to consider buying a package to run on
Windows :-( With nearly 900 accounts now we badly need an accounting
package to keep track of payments.

So I am afraid the news is not very good on LINUX and open source for this
kind of work.

Regards,

Paulos
