What you install in your htdocs directory is world readable.
I was able to read all of your Minivend installation, all of your CGI scripts
:-)
Try, for example, http://www.tisbook.com/tools/.

No problem here.
The URL http://www.tisbook.com/simple makes your webserver to send your browser
the page <DocumentRoot>/simple/index.html, since you have "DirectoryIndex
index.html" in your httpd.conf. (This is my guess: I couldn't read that file :-)
In /htdocs/simple/index.html there is a link to
http://www.tisbook/com/tools/simple/index.html. Since /tools is your CGI
directory, "simple" is interpreted as the name of a program to execute; the
following "/index.html" is passed to it.
Try, for example, http://www.tisbook/tools/printenv.cgi/index.html. You'll see:
SCRIPT_FILENAME = /usr/local/www/htdocs/tools/printenv.cgi
PATH_INFO = /index.html
REQUEST_URI = /tools/printenv.cgi/index.html
etc.
So the "simple" program can pass "index.html" to minivend, and it displays the
page "/catalogs/simple/pages/index.html". That is its job :-)
