[mv] MV4.04: runtiime error: couldn't init cache

I spent several hours trying to get a store catalog to work, but I ran out
of ideas. Please help. When I click the checkout button, 95% of the time I
get an internal server error. The error.log says something like:
xxx.home.com fS2NYgtR:nobody - [11/July/2000:21:21:38 -0400] simple
/cgi-bin/simple/process.html Runtime error: couldn't init cache at
/usr/home/mediafuze/mvend/lib/Vend/Table/GDBM.pm line 69, <IN> chunk 1.>
The strange thing is that sometimes I can go to the checkout page without an
error. I've changed the settings in catalog.cfg many times (i.e. NoCache,
Cookies, Static, etc. etc.), but the same configurations sometimes let me go
to the checkout page while 95% of the times I receive an error. I was able
to receive an order via email one time (I don't know how I did it, because
it didn't work the second time), so at least GnuPG, sendmail, etc. are
working.
I've tried from two different computers just to be sure. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!
