It seems that loop statements are incredibly slow. I'm using the
internal db for the database and a 1500 item loop will take 45 or more
seconds. Its a slow machine with limited memory (cyrix 200 with 16meg
freebsd 3.4) but its still a nice chunk of time to be waiting.

It can be, my process usually runs around 15MB. I am assumign it
probably has something to do with the nature of the database.
