Here's another way to ask my above question regarding MV4.04:

What possibilities exist for [total-cost] changing between the final
checkout page and the submission to Authorize.net and the receipt
mailing stage? That's what's happening in my case-- A discount that is
reflected in [total-cost] on the checkout page is disappearing when the
page is submitted.
    Thanks for any insights.
