[mv] Displaying the contents of an arbitrary database

I've been trying without success to find a way of listing the
contents of an arbitrary database. The database in question is a list
of news headlines (like "new product, click here. Pope visits queen,
click here, etc") that I want to display on the front page of the
 site.

The database has only three columns: num, date and headline.

I've tried the following and all have failed:

 [tag each news]
      <p>[loop-field headline]
 [/tag]

 [loop search="ra=yes/ml=9999"]
      <p>[loop-data news headline]
 [/loop]

 [loop search="ra=yes"]
 [sort news:date]
       <p>[loop-field headline]
 [/loop]

 [item-list news]
       <p>[item-field headline]
 [/item-list]

 [item-list]
       <p>[item-data news headline]
 [/item-list]

I'd also like to be able to limit the number of headlines returned and
to sort by date in decending order.

Regards,

Chris Wenham
