[mv] Discount and database bug? or just bad code?

Hello all, I've searched the list and the docs but couldn't find anything
that would tell me what is wrong and I am in a read bind.

I have a coupon database in which I am storing the discount amount that gets
applied when that coupon is entered. Below is a piece of that code.

[discount code=ALL_ITEMS]
    $s - [data base="coupons" field="discount" key="mycoupon"]
[/discount]

The problem is that with this code the discounts don't work. The database
lookup return a value (i.e. 5) when it is not in the discount tag, so I know
it is achieving the lookup, and when I hard code a value in place of the
lookup I receive a discount. So it is just when they are combined that the
discount breaks.

I am sure this is something simple. Can someone enlighten me as to what is
wrong here or give me code that does work?

I am using MiniVend 3.14-5.
