In catalog.cfg, you can use a .gif with
Locale en_US currency_symbol "<IMG src="/images/icon/usdollar.gif">"
or look into locale.txt file. You can see some lines like
code en_US de_DE fr_FR
currency_symbol $ DM FF
price_picture DM ### ### ###,##
Try for example
price_picture <IMG src="/images/icon/germandm.gif"> ### ### ###,##
