Ah, but is there a way to make it work with form fields so the user can enter any values?
My idea was along the lines of a select list for month and a text field for year:

Search by date:
from: [ month  V] [ year ]
to:   [ month  V] [ year ]      (pardon the terrible ascii art)
      [ SUBMIT ]

I have separate month and year fields in the database already.
