shipping calc oddity...

OK, basing shipping on total price.  shipping.asc follows:

When one enters the catalog and buys something, even multiple somethings, 
and goes to check out, shipping calculates correctly.  No errors anywhere.

HOWEVER - if one leaves the checkout page, clicks the browser "back" 
button and goes back and orders another something, the next trip to the 
checkout page shows shipping of -0-, and the error log shows 
"Custom shipping field "weight" doesn't exist.  Returning 0" messages.

Is it the use of the back button?  If so, what makes minivend abandon the 
shipping calculation is used to this point and start looking for 
weight-based shipping when that isn't specified anywhere?
