Thanks for the help but unfortunately that was not it ...
There are no [L) tags in the page and furthermore the word
"Unterbrechung" does not appear in my locale table.

I should have mentioned that I am using a German RedHat 5.2 with perl
version 5.004_05 installed. I assume that the mesg comes from either
linux or perl.
