The abbreviations are covered in ISO 4217, available e.g. on
http://www.xe.net/gen/iso4217.htm
or
http://www.freeamp.org/id3/iso4217.html
note that the Euro is usually listed as EUR, not XEU
There are reference sites out there that have information about locales for
JDK 1.1 and POSIX. A java demo and tutorial is available at
http://www.ibm.com/java/tools/international-classes/
For Posix there are locale definition source files available, they should
have all relevant info. Currency symbols is more difficult as half the
world uses $, which could get confusing. Since you would need the country
qualifier anyway, I would go with the 3-letter codes and possibly the
symbols defined as HTML entities.
