[mv] Unusually high load

******    message to minivend-users from "Christopher P. Lindsey" <lindsey@mallorn.com>     ******

Ever since I added catalog browsing capabilities, I've noticed that the
load on our dual Pentium Pro/200 Linux system has rocketed up to between 1.5
and 4.0. Of course, this results in 30 second waits for Web pages, which
is unacceptable.

Does anyone have any ideas to help optimize the browsing page? I've reduced
the "chunk" size from 10 to 8, only have one major SQL query (well, there's
a small one up to get COUNT(*)), tried reducing the number of [perl]s
and [if]s, and added a PRIMARY KEY definition to catalog.cfg.

The SQL server is on another, dedicated system, and the site only received
4235 page views yesterday.

This is the URL for one section of the catalog:

   http://www.heronswood.com/cgi-bin/catalog/browse?;Perennials::0:8;

and the source for the page is available here:

   http://www.mallorn.com/~lindsey/browse.txt

If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it... I'd hate to have
to upgrade the server, especially since we have no money. :)

Thanks,

Chris
