I do this.
[if value mv_searchspec][set name=my_searchspec interpolate=1]
[value mv_raw_searchspec][/set][/if]
SEARCH KEYS: [scratch my_searchspec]

remeber to have:
[set mv_put_session]Yes[/set]
somewhere to keep you scratch vars around.
