You can either use an ASCII file or not. MV does certain functions (like
[search ..] or pure text searches) on the text file. If you only want to
use the SQL DB, you keep an empty ASCII file with only the field names
and set the NoImport directive to products.txt or whatever that file is.
In this case, you cannot change the contents of your DB by editing the
ASCII file, as you can, if you keep the ASCII file populated. Also
mv_searchtype can never be "text" ("st=test") or Glipms.
This is essentially the same behaviour as with GDM or GDBM.  
I am sorry, but I do not have an answer for the second question.
