This is a comment.  It is not sent to the Requestor(s):

the UI has variable.txt hardcoded ... Even if we were to make it possible to be configurable, it is still possible to set up 2 VariableDatabase instances ...

If you were to do something like this you'd be able to edit preferences in either the one or the other.
