We could create a directive

VariableParseLocale Yes/No

This would be useful for the UI too (no need for [msg] tags in
UI_ anymore).

In Norway every product has a flat sales tax (24%).  Where do I set this or 
how do I set this? 

It's not a good solution to calculate the tax AFTER choosing a state (or 
zip).  When the tax is the same in one country you will want to know the tax 
BEFORE registering to pay (e.g. in your shopping cart).

If I understand this correctly if you have three tax rates as we have in the
Netherlands (19%, 8%, 0%) is this how you would do it:

I don't know if this is sufficient to answer your question, but
I think it is worth a try (it was a CVS log message from Mike):

* Instituted the VAT and extended taxing I promised quite a time ago.

  If the SalesTax directive is set to "multi", then the type of
  tax is read from [data table=country col=tax key="[value country]"].

  NOTE: Most everything is configurable for variable name and
        field name via Variable MV_*, but defaults are shown below.

  1. If no string is found, tax returns 0.

  2. If string "simple:(\w+)" is found, uses fly_tax() as with
     recent standard demos.

  3. If string "state" is found, does a re-lookoup with

        select tax from state where country = country and state = state

     and value is applied below.

  4. If just digits are found, rate applied directly -- i.e. "0.05"

  5. If N.NN% is found, applied as percentage.

  6. If category = N.NN%, default = N.NN% is found, the tax_category
     field in the products database is used to determine tax basis.
     If no tax_category, "default" rate is used.

 This product data

 with this country and state data:

Ni hau. ( I speak just a little Chinese). You would be most welcome to
modify Interchange to run with Big-5 encoding. You should look at two
things:
1. Go to interchange.redhat.com and subscribe to the interchange-i18n
mailing list (for internationalization issues).

2. Please look at translating the locale.txt files, so we might all have
a Chinese UI for the Admin area.

3. Please keep me updated on your progress, and do not hesitate with any
questions. We are here to help!

Is there a French version available?  I am building a bilingual site in
Canada with French and English.

P.S. I think different directories and pages for each language would be
easier to maintain because the size of each directory would be more
manageable and orderly.  Also I like  the [LC]...[/LC]  pragma pair
because it is clean and appropriate for multilinlgual cases.

Not that I know of. How the foundation catalog has to be i18n is not
yet decided. And for the UI French speaking volunteers aren't there.

Different directories and pages for each language is IMHO not a good
idea. If you have a bug in your pages, you need to fix it always in
two places. The same goes for improvements.

For a limited number of languages [LC] might be a fine idea.

You can count me in for the French translation. I am not yet very familiar with
CVS so you may send it by e-mail.  But there is no rush because I have to get
my basic store up first. So I will start by translating the foundation store.
