[ic] Permission denied ./configure

I am trying to install interchange on an Apache server. When I tried =
expanding the archive with=20
gzip -dc interchange-4.6.1.tar.gz | tar xvf -

I got a screen full of scrolling gibberish, so I unpacked it to my =
desktop and ftped the whole directory to my server. I used telnet to =
connect to the server and changed to the interchange directory and ran =
./configure and I got "permission denied". Can anyone help wit this?
