I did that, exactly....

locate variables.txt is what I used, and it still comes up empty....

It is because the file is variable.txt and variable.gdbm.....

This is the key hint that allowed me to find the file...

I have been out for a couple of days, and I haven't got back to trying 
this suggestion.  I will give feedback later.
