Here's what I think.  Have a seperate table for discount codes.  On
the basket page, have an input for them to type in the discount code
with it's own little "apply discount" submit button.  Then you can
take this entered value and look it up.  If it exists, [discount] your
totals.  If it doesn't, give a warning.

I don't know, I haven't tried.  My only concern with putting discounts
in the products table is that it becomes searchable with the rest of
the products.  Maybe you don't care where your customers get the
discount code as long as they buy something.  Maybe you do.

I think however you do it is going to require some programming.
