First of all, I don't think you should have or at least, don't need wu-ftp and ftpd installed at the same time.

My guess is that something has changed in your inetd.conf or xinetd.conf file for the ftp setting.

I'd also suggest making sure the inetd or xinetd is running.  Remeber to restart whichever of those you're using if you edit inetd.conf or xinetd.conf.

Lastly, I prefer proftpd because it is much more configurable especially if you're doing virtual hosts.
