For the record I got this working. The problem turns out to be the fact
that I am using 7.2.1 version of postgresql. I learned this from looking
at postgresql logs. Older version would truncate the data and insert it
into the tables. Postgresql 7.2.1 and higher no longer do this, they
will not execute the insert.

So I have to use filter tags in the /etc/log_transaction file to make
sure the data will fit into the database. This is discussed in this
archive record.
