I did alot of work last year for one client who hosted their own webserver,
which was connected to their LAN and configured to allow some communication
with other devices and systems in their network. We wrote some utilities
for printing mailing labels, packing slips, etc out of the UI, both
transactionally and in batch mode, just by hooking our own custom UserTags
and Globalsubs into the existing code. There is a wealth of modules on CPAN
for all manner of plain text and Postscript printing of forms and labels to
supported devices, and Linux has all the daemons and tools you need to talk
to those devices. So the main thing is having that LAN or VLAN presence,
the rest is just a matter of putting the pieces together.
