I just checked the log again, it says:

table 'products' failed: Couldn't create /home/craftsma/catalogs/craftsma/products/products.txt.10: Permission denied

What is this products.txt.10 file all about?

I took this as a sign that either I was on the right track or an idiot so I went ahead and added a tab and a field name to the top line of my cat.txt file and hit applied changes. This worked just fine, I saw the new field in the admin, changed the widget, added some data and retreived it on the results page just where I needed it. So far so good.

The error log said "could not create database table products.txt" so I right away undid my change but it was too late. I called my admin who restarted the ic server which didn't help. We backed up my catalog and recreated the foundation demo and wrote my catalog directory back and that didn't work either. We now get the following error:
