You are exactly right. That's how I finally resolved the problem - not from
the docs.

That was the easy part. I simply set a cron event to run 'fortune' and to
pipe the output into a file (qotd) in this case. It runs at midnight. IC
picks up the content of QOTD and displays it.

The only help I was looking for when I RTFM was how to get the contents of
the file into the web page. Grep got that answer for me, not the docs.
